our love affair with new york is extensive! where does one start to describe a city of this calibre – join us as we take you on a journey through our highlights of this amazing destination and the inspiration behind our scarf – concrete jungle.
where we stayed – the standard hotel. standing boldly in new yorks meat packing district, literally straddling the high-line. the ‘hip’ standard hotel is part of a chain of five boutique hotels. original investors in the hotel were leonardo dicaprio, cameron diaz, benicio del toro, james iha and smashing pumpkins guitarist d’arcy wretzky – not too cool huh? equipped with a restaurant, diner style grill, german biergarten, rooftop bar and creperie, ice-skating rink, bikes and stunning views of new york and the hudson … there is something for every luxe loving hip intrepid traveller here.
where we ate – buddakan. as you enter via the vertiginous staircase, through the grotto of lounges arranged around a central hallway as lofty as some of the worlds finest cathedrals and as theatrically brooding as a hollywood vampire movie. christian liaigre’s design is a hard act to follow, but chef michael schulson effortlessly tackles the challenge of wowing hundreds of diners a night with elegant imitations of chinese cuisine – dumplings filled with vividly green edamame nestled in a sauternes broth was our favourite – drool worthy.
where we shopped – jeffrey. the one stop shop! it’s all here with impeccable customer service to boot!
what to explore – the high-line. the high-line is a public park on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on manhattan’s west side. it runs from gansevoort street in the meatpacking district to west 30th street. it’s urban paths and landscaping offer new yorker’s and tourists alike a refreshing slice of garden serenity along with supreme views over the hudson river and beyond. initiatives like the high line are largely possible because of donations. become a friend of the high-line and help this little piece of green continue – visit www.thehighline.org
other adventures – one of the best way to discover new york is to walk it! get lost in the avenues and side streets of this easily navigated ‘grid’ layout city. stumble upon hidden treasures, celebrity hangouts and to die for street food as you take in all the detail – even in the winter months with snow-a-plenty new york is a delight to explore on foot (possibly not in 5 inch manolo blahniks like carrie bradshaw however!)
