Q&A with Kylie Hinds of not heidi
www.notheidi.com.au
We caught up with Kylie Hinds of not heidi for a quick Q&A and to see what exciting new pieces she has coming out this year. Read on below…
‘not heidi’ is an independent, small label which reinterprets traditional tribal jewellery into beautiful contemporary pieces with a modern look. Each piece is made by hand, combining unique jewellery elements such as vintage coins, bells, beads, and traditionally handcrafted amulets with natural leather and cords. The handcrafted nature of each element means that no two pieces are exactly the same.
B&K: Tell us the story behind not heidi? What inspired you to start the business?
NH: not heidi started, literally, because I wanted a necklace I couldn’t have. The only way to get it, was to make it myself!
B&K: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
NH: I draw inspiration from different tribal groups around the world. I am really drawn to India and Morocco and the beautiful design aesthetic that they have in their countries.
B&K: Where is your jewellery made?
NH: Currently, I hand make all of my stock, mainly to order. My new pieces coming will be made by traditional craftspeople in India.
B&K: What exciting pieces do you have coming out this year?
NH: This year I am moving into some new areas which compliment the tribal style, but are a little more diverse. I have been working with my jewellers in India and their artisans to hand make the new collection, using traditional methods and pieces in Sterling Silver. I will slowly be adding in miniaturised versions of some of my favourite amulets and pieces for fine chains, as well as some super glam tribal earrings.
B&K: How would you describe your personal style?
NH: Casual with bling
B&K: What are your favourite pieces of jewellery to wear?
NH: I definitely have runs on things that I wear a lot. At the moment as it is getting cooler, I tend to go for wrist bling and earrings and rings.
B&K: How do you best like to accessorise your scarf?
NH: Going into winter I move everything to the wrist – I love having coins pop out of jackets down at the hand… and maybe the odd shell as well.
B&K: What is your favourite scarf trend at the moment?
NH: I am loving the head scarf look and am loving doubling up scarves as a sarong when I travel.
B&K: Who are some of your favourite fashion icons of the moment?
NH: Elle Ferguson – She has such a relaxed yet glam, Aussie style.
