Whether your mum loves the great outdoors or just wants a few uninterrupted hours of sleep (and a clean house!) Here are some ideas that will make this special day one to remember. The best part? They don’t involve the crowds at popular brunch and lunch spots and are mostly all free!
-
Bring over the Sunday newspapers and take away coffees: When was the last time you sat across from a loved one and read a physical newspaper? Enjoy the simple act of being together in silence, or chatting together over the Sunday gossip pages!
-
Bring over breakfast and deliver ‘breakfast in bed: Instead of braving the crowds at a popular brunch spot, bring over a breakfast you’ve prepared the night before (like a frittata or homemade banana bread) and let your mum indulge in breakfast in bed. Alternatively, bring groceries with you to whip up a delicious big breakfast at home. Just make sure to do the dishes after!
-
Go for a walk: There is nothing better than a nice stroll around the neighbourhood. Not only is it a relaxing and invigorating way to start (or finish) the day, it’s also a good opportunity to play catch-up if it’s been a while since you’ve spent time together.
-
Set the table outside: Weather permitting, set a table outside that’s fit for the occasion. Get linens and a few flower-filled vases, and then gather everyone for an alfresco meal or Sunday roast! Or you can put on a ‘high tea’ and bring out the beautiful tea sets, accompanied with some delicious treats… like mums favourite scones, cream and jam. Mmmmm.
-
Visit a nursery or plant some herbs: Not only do you get to check out all the luscious greenery while you’re there, you can also grab a cuppa or lunch while you’re at it. Pick out a few of your mum’s favourite herbs -rosemary, thyme, and basil are always good choices – and plant them in individual pots for the kitchen or in one big pot she can keep outside.
-
Take a ceramic and pottery class: Whether you sign up for ceramics or another class, do something together that could turn into a shared routine. Ceramics classes we are loving: The Ceramic House, Brisbane.
-
Go for a drive: Short drives are always a pleasant Sunday activity, especially if you go on a scenic one. And if it’s been a while since you’ve spoken to mum, a drive might be a good idea—it gives you both somewhere to look as you ease into a conversation. We recommend the scenic drive to Palm Beach, Sydney, stopping off in Newport, Avalon and Whale beach on the way. If in Queensland, Coopers Shoot is a beautiful scenic drive or if you are further up north, take a day trip to Montville.
-
Watch a classic: There are so many good romantic comedies to choose from, this could turn into a movie marathon. Try an old favourite like Beaches, Steel Magnolias, When Harry Met Sally… or opt for a newer classic like Bridget Jones Diary.
-
Check out a winery: Make sure you know your mum’s preferred wine type before you select one, and open the invitation to friends and family. If your mum is a gin lover, take her to a distillery such as Cape Byron Distillery. Buy her a gift while you’re there!
-
Book a day spa: If you’re feeling really generous, why not give your mum an experience she’ll treasure. Book her into a day spa so she can really relax and unwind (or book yourselves both into a couples treatment so you get in on the experience as well!). We recommend Halcyon House in Cabarita Beach, NSW. You can enjoy the steam room prior to your treatment and relax in the lounge area with a tea or iced water afterwards. Another one of our favourites is endota spa who have over 100 locations nationwide.
